Background of the study
School libraries are integral to supporting curriculum delivery, providing students with access to textbooks, reference materials, and digital resources that enrich classroom instruction (Martins, 2023). Research shows that well‑resourced school libraries correlate with higher student achievement, improved reading comprehension, and enhanced research skills (Talabi, 2024). In Minna LGA, disparities in school library provision—ranging from fully equipped media centers to minimal collections—mirror socio‑economic inequalities across neighborhoods (Ahmed, 2025). While some secondary schools boast modern libraries with internet access and trained librarians, others rely solely on teacher‑managed book corners. The extent to which these variations influence academic performance in core subjects such as mathematics, English, and science has not been empirically examined in the region. By analyzing the relationship between library resource quality and student outcomes, this study aims to inform equitable resource allocation and professional development strategies for school librarians in Minna LGA (Yakubu, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite recognition of school libraries’ pedagogical value, many institutions in Minna LGA lack adequate collections, furniture, and staffing, leading to underutilization by students and teachers (Bala, 2024). School performance data indicate that institutions with limited library resources consistently underperform in external examinations, yet the causal link remains unverified (Ibrahim, 2025). Without robust evidence on how library resource levels affect student achievement, education planners cannot prioritize investments or design interventions to strengthen school libraries effectively.
Objectives of the study
To assess the availability and quality of school library resources in Minna LGA.
To examine the relationship between resource levels and students’ academic performance.
To propose strategies for improving library support in under‑resourced schools.
Research questions
What is the current state of school library resources across secondary schools in Minna LGA?
How do differences in library resources correlate with student performance in national examinations?
What interventions can enhance the effectiveness of school libraries?
Significance of the study
The research offers empirical evidence to guide education authorities, school administrators, and library professionals in strengthening school library services. By demonstrating the impact of library resources on student learning, the study supports targeted investments that promote academic excellence and equity in Minna LGA.
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to public and private secondary schools within Minna Local Government Area. It does not cover primary schools or tertiary institutions. Constraints include variations in record‑keeping practices and potential confounding factors such as teacher quality.
